Four Huskers earn football scholarships

When one of those walk-ons gets a chance to shine, it can lead to an unexpected honor – a football scholarship. And coach Bo Pelini recently bestowed the honor on four current players who came to the program as a walk-on and have proven their worthiness of the honor.
Seniors Austin Jones (I-back), Tyler Legate (fullback) and Lance Thorell (defensive back) and junior P.J. Mangieri (long snapper) were presented their scholarships last week by Pelini, who said all four are deserving of the opportunity.
"They come from different backgrounds and different circumstances, but each of them represents what Nebraska football is all about. They have worked hard and done the right things on and off the field," he said.
The four join current Huskers Mike Caputo (center) and Austin Cassidy (safety) as walk-ons who have earned scholarships.

Huskers start year ranked No. 11

Fans with Husker football tickets will get a chance to see one of the top college football teams battle it out for a Big Ten and possible national championship title during the 2011 season.
Nebraska begins the season ranked No. 11 in the USA Today coaches poll, one of five Big Ten teams that were tabbed by 59 national coaches in the first major poll of the year.
Nebraska is ranked right behind No. 10 Wisconsin, who is the highest-ranked Big Ten team in the preseason poll. Nebraska plays all four of the Big Ten teams ranked with them in the preseason poll, including home games with No. 16 Ohio State and No. 17 Michigan State, and road tests against the 10th-ranked Badgers and No. 25 Penn State.
Three former Big 12 foes are ranked in the top 10, lead by top-ranked Oklahoma. Oklahoma State is ranked No. 8, while Texas A&M is ninth. Missouri (No. 21) and Texas (No. 24) are also preseason ranked in the coaches poll, giving the Big 12 five teams.
The Southeast Conference has the most teams ranked in the preseason with eight – Alabama (2), LSU (4), South Carolina (12), Arkansas (14), Auburn (19), Mississippi State (20), Georgia (22) and Florida (24).

Don't look for Bo to jump ship for alma mater

The big news in college football this past week was the sudden resignation of Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel, which came in the wake of a growing scandal involving current and former players trading memorabilia for tattoos, money and drugs.
The big question for fans with Husker football tickets is: does this mean Bo Pelini will leave Nebraska to coach his alma mater?
There are a lot of "what ifs" surrounding the situation right now, and Husker football fans shouldn't worry, at least this season, about whether or not the man who has re-ignited the Nebraska engine will jump the tracks and return home to coach in his home state.
First, Ohio State is keeping the job in house for now, as co-defensive coordinator Luke Fickell will serve as interim head coach. Depending on how he does this year, and what kind of sanctions the NCAA slaps Ohio State with once things are all said and done, Fickell may be replaced by a big-name coach who could help bring Ohio State back and ride out the storm that comes with NCAA sanctions.
A number of media outlets are citing Pelini as one of several national candidates for the job, along with former Florida coach Urban Meyer and Mike Stoops, a former classmate of Pelini's and the brother of Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops.
Several other names are being mentioned, including Alabama coach Nick Saban, but if history is any indicator, Ohio State will want, at the very least, somebody with ties to the state of Ohio. An Ohio State alum or former assistant coach is probably the preferred route. And while Pelini would fit that description, as a former player, unless he wins a national championship at Nebraska this season, it is doubtful that he will leave Lincoln for Ohio State.

National champion coach likes Huskers' chances

When a guy who has won two national championships and led three undefeated teams to bowl-winning efforts talks about the Nebraska football team, fans with Husker football tickets have to like what they hear.
Former Florida coach Urban Meyer told the Omaha World-Herald recently that he likes what he sees from the Nebraska football team as they head into their first season in the Big Ten Conference.
Meyer was a graduate assistant at Ohio State when Pelini was a freshman defensive back, and he likes where Pelini is taking the Huskers as head coach.
"It's right there," Meyer said, adding that if quarterback Taylor Martinez plays as well as he did against Kansas State last year – a game Meyer saw in person – the Huskers have a good shot at winning the Big Ten in their first year.
Meyer borrowed a lot of his offensive philosophy from former Husker football coach Tom Osborne.
"When I first started at Utah with Alex Smith, we took a lot of concepts from Tom Osborne's style of offense," he said. "By accident? No, absolutely not. There's probably no one who ever did option football the way Nebraska did it."

Don't expect much in Spring Game

If you have Husker football tickets for Saturday's Red-White Spring Game and expect to see a lot of creative plays, you are going to be disappointed.
Nebraska's new offensive coordinator, Tim Beck, said there won't be a lot of trick plays or unusual formations for Saturday's annual team scrimmage, which is expected to draw a big crowd to Memorial Stadium for the annual event.
"There's going to be a lot of things we're going to hold back," Beck told the Lincoln Journal-Star.
The key word to the new Nebraska offense has been "attack," according to several sources, which means we could see the Huskers going one of several directions.
Of course, we probably won't see much of it at Saturday's game, because the Husker coaching staff certainly doesn't want to tip their hand, and would just as soon keep the rest of the Big Ten Conference guessing as to what Nebraska will bring to the table during their inaugural season in the conference.

Huskers fall to Texas Tech, Cyclones next

After coming up with a huge win on the road last week, the Husker football team had a big letdown Saturday against Texas Tech, losing 31-10.

The Huskers were their own worst enemy on Saturday, as the majority of the 12 penalties whistled against Nebraska came on offense, some of those coming at very inopportune moments.

As if that wasn't enough, the Husker offense simply did not show up on Saturday, racking up just 295 yards and never really getting into a groove until it was way too late.

The play of the game came early, when Niles Paul failed to catch a lateral pass from Zac Lee. While the Huskers assumed the ball was incomplete, no whistle blew and Texas Tech's Daniel Howard picked up the ball and ran 82 yards for a touchdown, giving the Red Raiders a 14-0 lead.

Nebraska's offense didn't find the end zone until early in the fourth quarter Khiry Cooper caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Cory Green, who replaced Lee a couple of times during the second half. Nebraska trailed 24-10 with 8:40 to go and still had a chance to come back, but the Red Raiders responded with a methodical nine-play, 54-yard drive that ended in the final score of the game and put things out of reach.

The Huskers are 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the Big 12 North Division, tied with Kansas and Colorado for second place, one-half game behind 2-1 Kansas State. Nebraska will look to get back in the win column this Saturday, as they play host to Iowa State in an 11:30 a.m. matchup at Memorial Stadium.

Iowa State, which rarely wins in Memorial Stadium, is coming in with some confidence after winning their first conference road game in more than two years, beating Baylor over the weekend. Steinkuhler still a question mark

The defensive line was already somewhat precarious before the departure of Kevin Dixon. After his dismissal, there were concerns being raised about the Husker football team's depth up front on defense.

For the past few days, Ty Steinkuhler has been out of action dealing with a bad back. He still wasn't on the practice field Thursday as the team went through its fourth day of practice in preparation for the 2008 season.

Coach Bo Pelini told the media that Steinkuhler's absence is not a major concern to him at this point, noting that the senior probably could have practiced yesterday, but he felt it better to not rush him back on to the field so quickly.

A number of players are seeing action in Steinkuhler's absence, including freshman Terrence Moore. It remains to be seen how healthy Steinkuhler will be as the days wind down before the season opener against Western Michigan on Saturday, Aug. 30.

First day of practice a hot one for Huskers

The temperatures flirted with 100 degrees Monday as the Husker footbal team began preparations for the 2008 season in Lincoln.

The first day of fall practice included some new faces, such as Khiry Cooper. The fifth-round draft pick of the Anaheim Angels in Major League Baseball was there, and unless the Angels can come to terms with Cooper by Aug. 15, he'll be in Husker pads when the season starts on Aug. 30 against Western Michigan.

One face that won't be seen in camp is that of Kevin Dixon. The senior defensive tackle was dismissed by coach Bo Pelini for the classic "violating team policies" rule. Dixon was arrested twice during the month of July on charges ranging from possession of marijuana to urinating in public. His departure creates a problem for a defensive line that already had depth problems, and those problems will become even more of a challenge without Dixon in the lineup.

Another face not seen on the field was cornerback Anthony Blue, who is still recovering from an ACL injury suffered during winter conditioning. Jaivorio Burkes was also out due to medical reasons, but should be back on the practice field later this week.

Practice begins Monday for Huskers

The long, cold, dark and dreary offseason ends in just two days for Husker football fans.

The first day of fall practice is scheduled for Monday as the Huskers prepare for their 2008 season opener on Saturday, Aug. 30 against Western Michigan. The Huskers will practice from 3:45 p.m. to 6 p.m. on the first day, and coach Bo Pelini and some of the players will talk with the media after that first day's practice.

The team will work out twice a day on six days between now and the season opener. Two-a-day practice sessions will be at 9 a.m. and 3:45 p.m. and will be held between Aug. 9 and Aug. 22.

The Lincoln Journal-Star reported that the Huskers will practice six days a week during the month of August, taking Sundays off.

Husker fans get to meet players and coaches

Husker football fans will be able to meet the Husker players and coaches during a special Fan Day event at Memorial Stadium.

The event will be on Sunday, Aug. 17 beginning at 2 p.m. Fans can meet the players and coaches, who will be on hand to sign autographs and pose for pictures with Husker football fans.

The Huskers Authentic store will be open that day and fans can pick up posters and media guides at the store.
