National champion coach likes Huskers' chances

When a guy who has won two national championships and led three undefeated teams to bowl-winning efforts talks about the Nebraska football team, fans with Husker football tickets have to like what they hear.
Former Florida coach Urban Meyer told the Omaha World-Herald recently that he likes what he sees from the Nebraska football team as they head into their first season in the Big Ten Conference.
Meyer was a graduate assistant at Ohio State when Pelini was a freshman defensive back, and he likes where Pelini is taking the Huskers as head coach.
"It's right there," Meyer said, adding that if quarterback Taylor Martinez plays as well as he did against Kansas State last year – a game Meyer saw in person – the Huskers have a good shot at winning the Big Ten in their first year.
Meyer borrowed a lot of his offensive philosophy from former Husker football coach Tom Osborne.
"When I first started at Utah with Alex Smith, we took a lot of concepts from Tom Osborne's style of offense," he said. "By accident? No, absolutely not. There's probably no one who ever did option football the way Nebraska did it."

Huskers get much-needed help

One of the traditions fans with Husker football tickets have enjoyed over the years is outstanding play at the running back position.
This year, Nebraska has some concerns at that position, as a lack of depth behind junior standout Rex Burkhead is leaving people to wonder what the Huskers are going to do without the traditional ground attack.
Earlier this week, the Husker football team got some great news, as former Eastern Michigan recruit Mike Marrow is transferring to Nebraska, where he will be reunited with his father, graduate assistant Vince Marrow.
Marrow signed with Alabama after graduating in 2009. He redshirted that season and moved to Eastern Michigan after some deaths in the family, according to the Lincoln Journal-Star.
Marrow didn't play at Eastern Michigan last year, and the 6-foot-1, 250-pound back is waiting to see if he'll be cleared to play this year for the Huskers.
Marrow's arrival would give the Huskers some much-needed size in the backfield. Marrow is a thick, solid runner that could easily step in at fullback with his size. He told Husker coaches that he's excited about making the transfer and is looking forward to giving Nebraska another look in the backfield.

Don't expect much in Spring Game

If you have Husker football tickets for Saturday's Red-White Spring Game and expect to see a lot of creative plays, you are going to be disappointed.
Nebraska's new offensive coordinator, Tim Beck, said there won't be a lot of trick plays or unusual formations for Saturday's annual team scrimmage, which is expected to draw a big crowd to Memorial Stadium for the annual event.
"There's going to be a lot of things we're going to hold back," Beck told the Lincoln Journal-Star.
The key word to the new Nebraska offense has been "attack," according to several sources, which means we could see the Huskers going one of several directions.
Of course, we probably won't see much of it at Saturday's game, because the Husker coaching staff certainly doesn't want to tip their hand, and would just as soon keep the rest of the Big Ten Conference guessing as to what Nebraska will bring to the table during their inaugural season in the conference.

Maher the new toe behind the Husker kicking game

One of the biggest questions fans with Husker football tickets will have is in one of the least-talked about places on the roster – the kicking game.
For the last four years, Alex Henery has been about as automatic as one could be with field goal duties. He made 68 of 76 field goals during his outstanding career here, and now that level of success is going to ride on a different toe with Henery's graduation.
Brett Maher looks to be the guy to take over at Nebraska when it comes to toeing the ball. He's punting well in spring drills and looks to be the guy who will handle the major kicking duties this season.
Maher is a junior from Kearney who had a tremendous amount of success in high school, competing in football and track and field, where he set a state record in the pole vault.
Maher had chances to play at Colorado State and Ohio, but chose to stay home and play for the Huskers.
