If you've had Husker football tickets over the years, you will no doubt remember the old days when Nebraska played Oklahoma for the conference championship.
In the old days, that matchup was always one of the games of the year, one of the games that determined who would play for a national championship. During one stretch in time, Nebraska and Oklahoma either won or shared the Big Eight title on an annual basis, and the winner usually found themselves in the Orange Bowl playing for a national title.
Those two old rivals are getting together one more time this weekend, as the Huskers face the Sooners in the Big 12 Conference Championship this Saturday at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The winner will receive the conference's BCS bid to play in the Fiesta Bowl, while the loser likely will wind up in the Alamo Bowl or the Cotton Bowl.
This is only the second time Nebraska and Oklahoma have met for all the marbles since the Big 12 Conference was formed in 1997. Oklahoma won that meeting in 2006, one of five conference titles they have won in Big 12 play.
Nebraska will be playing with a question mark at quarterback. Taylor Martinez was held out of last week's 45-17 win over Colorado, and his status is day-to-day according to coach Bo Pelini. Cody Green has proven to be an effective replacement the past few weeks, and Pelini hinted that both signal-callers may be used in Saturday's game.
Oklahoma reached the big game with a wild win over in-state rival Oklahoma State on Saturday. The two teams combined to score 40 points in the final period before the Sooners held on for a 47-41 victory. The win put the Sooners, Cowboys and Texas A&M in a three-way tie for the top spot in the South Division. The conference uses the latest BCS standings to break a three-way tie, and Oklahoma's No. 9 ranking in the BCS standings (compared to 14 for OSU and 18 for A&M) put the Sooners in the title game, setting up a battle of old Big Eight rivals.
