Saturday, he gets his first chance to lead the Huskers to the top of the conference mountain, as Nebraska takes on Texas for the Big 12 Championship this Saturday at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Texas.
It's been a wild ride for the Huskers this year, as they take a 9-3 record into Saturday's battle with the undefeated Longhorns. Nebraska had a heartbreaking loss at Virginia Tech earlier in the year, were dominated at home by Texas Tech and self-destructed with eight turnovers in an inexplainable loss to Iowa State.
But Coach Bo Pelini has righted the Big Red ship, as the Huskers carry a five-game winning streak into Saturday's 7 p.m. matchup for the Big 12 title. Nebraska pulled off a huge home win with a 10-7 upset of Oklahoma, and beat Baylor, Kansas, Kansas State and Colorado to close out its first North Division title since 2006.
The Huskers take on a Texas team that has looked solid down the stretch, but has shown some vulnerability. The Longhorns have been a slow-starting team for much of the season, but with Heisman Trophy candidate Colt McCoy running the show at quarterback, the Longhorns have had a mighty strong kick at the end and have put themselves in position to win the school's second national championship in five years.
